WALLACE SOCIETY DINNER 2009

This years dinner was once again held at the Wallace Tavern in Elderslie. A more appropriate venue would be hard to find I'm sure you'll agree.

The menu was full of Xmas fare and it was hard to finally decide what to go for but I opted for the Balmoral Chicken stuffed with Haggis, topped with a creamy whisky sauce. I know you're probably not that interested in what I had but I was just reliving the moment, mmmmmmm chicken!!

Right where was I, oh right, there was a healthy wee turnout on a dreach Friday night whereupon we were able to reflect on the years events and take some pride in another successful year for the Society.
We were also there of course to listen to our guest of honour, the one and only, better than Elvis, Ted Christopher!!

But first Society Convenor David R. Ross reflected on the year gone by and how Scotland is slowly but surely changing the way she thinks about herself as a nation and how independence might not be as far off as some would have you believe!!

David has been trying to establish some way of paying homage to our flag, not an oath of allegiance or anything like that, more some words from the heart of what it feels like to be Scottish and live under the shelter of the Saltire, what he's come away with is stunning in its simplicity:

I stand before this flag, the white Saltire of St Andrew in the blue summer's sky.
It represents the soil from which I sprang, and to which I must one day return.
It represents Scotland.
As it was, as it is, as it always will be.

Stirring stuff indeed!! David then introduced the legend that is Ted. I say it nearly every time I see him that I've seldom seen him better, but on occasions like this I really mean it!! In front of a small crowd in an intimate atmosphere such as the Wallace Tavern Ted was simply outstanding!!

Ted gave the Elderslie faithful some old favourites some new ones and plenty of requests, a wee bit of impromptu karaoke and a very large slice of Sidney Devine!!

Ted you're a star, everyone who was there will know what I mean, if you weren't there you missed a fantastic night, mind you, there's always next year!!
