WALLACE SOCIETY DINNER 2009

This year's dinner was once again held at the Wallace Tavern in Elderslie, a more appropriate venue would be hard to find I'm sure you'll all agree. The menu was once again full of traditional Xmas fare, all three main choices went down a storm and our compliments most certainly went to the chef. Despite the atrocious weather we had our best turnout ever and we almost ran out of tables, everyone of you who showed up should be congratulated for it was definitely a night for staying at home. For those of us who braved it we were in for a great wee night. Duncan welcomed everyone to our annual dinner and thanked everyone for all their hard work throughout the year and gave us a quick recap of one of our most successful years to date. We also paid tribute to our dear departed friend David Ross who died in January. Duncan shared some of his own favourite memories of David with us which brought smiles to our faces which is how we should remember him, sadly gone but never far from our thoughts.

Fiery Jack were our entertainment on this cold December evening and what a feast of songs they served up to us, from warm traditional ballads to some Scottish classics which were given Fiery Jack's very own special treatment, we'd like to express our sincere thanks to George and the lads for a wonderful nights entertainment, they went down an absolute storm. In David's honour we've been trying to establish some way of paying homage to our flag, not an oath of allegiance or anything like that, more some words from the heart of what it feels like to be Scottish and live under the shelter of the Saltire, what he come away with is stunning in its simplicity:

I stand before this flag, the white Saltire of St Andrew in the blue summer's sky.
It represents the soil from which I sprang, and to which I must one day return.
It represents Scotland.
As it was, as it is, as it always will be.
